In Our Eyes:
Women’s, Nonbinary, and Transgender Perspectives from the Collection
This exhibition features works in a variety of media to center and celebrate stories told from the artists’ perspective. Each of the pieces highlights the unique experiences of female, transgender, and gender non-conforming artists by addressing issues such as racial and gender identity, sexuality, discrimination and violence. Through explorations of memory, storytelling, and history as they are reflected in a diversity of forms and subjects, this exhibition engages critically with the realities of our time while also examining their nuanced historical context.
The artworks on view were created by a diverse group of contemporary artists who are often faced with the deeply rooted legacy of inequality and discrimination. Artist Nina Chanel Abney once described her art as “easy to swallow, hard to digest,” acknowledging that through visual representation art can shed light on historically underrepresented subjects and difficult themes. This exhibition seeks to establish a dialogue between artworks as well as to encourage visitors to reflect on current and historical events while learning about each artist and seeing the world through their eyes. Included in the exhibition are artists such as Abney, Elinor Carucci, Jess T. Dugan, and Jordan Casteel, among others whose artistic practice brings to the fore important, yet often overlooked issues.
In Our Eyes is guest-curated by Dr. Kimberly Dennis, Professor of Art History and Sexuality, Women’s, and Gender Studies at Rollins and students in ARH 404 Museum Studies Practicum.
